CARE for Kids and Families, a multi-year, collaborative project based at CoLab, is working to expand access to culturally responsive behavioral healthcare across Washington state. Recently, the project team sent out a survey inviting community members to share ideas for non-traditional wellness services that they would like to see qualify for reimbursement.

Congratulations to Brittany Goldstein, MD, one of six new recipients of the 2024-2025 Webb Fellowship! The Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP) created the William Webb Fellowship Program to foster the career development and leadership potential of advanced psychiatry residents and C-L Psychiatry fellows at an early stage in their career.

We’re pleased to announce that the winner of this year's Joseph Becker Research Award is Emma Parrish, MS, a psychology resident who’s part of the General Adult Track. Mentored by Sarah Kopelovich, PhD, the objective of Emma’s research is to evaluate effectiveness of a brief CBT for psychosis intervention on psychological recovery, cognitive flexibility, and progress.

Two faculty members were honored with awards at ACLP 2024: Lydia Chwastiak, MD, MPH received the Wayne Katon Research Award for her work studying psychopathology and the medically ill. This award was renamed in 2015 in the spirit and memory or Wayne Katon, MD, a dedicated clinical researcher and pioneer in collaborative care. Another honoree was Anna Ratzliff, MD, PhD who received the Don L. Lipsitt Award for Achievement in Collaborative Care. This award recognizes excellence and innovation in the integration of mental health with other medical care. Congratulations to both!

In Fiscal Year 2024, the PCL completed 1,286 consultations with 702 providers to help 1,172 patients in 35 of Washington’s 39 counties. This is a 9% increase from 2023, and the PCL’s growth occurred in more than half of Washington counties. We are pleased that many rural communities had higher PCL call rates per 100,000 residents compared to the more well-resourced counties in the state.

Mental health providers face significant challenges implementing effective interventions with light touch or short-term training. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration awarded a new National Center for Mental Health: Dissemination, Implementation, and Sustainment (MHDIS) to Stanford’s Center for Dissemination and Implementation. MHDIS will build the capacity to select and implement evidence-supported practices and programs, sharing pragmatic, accessible guidance through implementation science-based targeted and intensive technical assistance.

The UW Medicine Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions is funding ten new projects that will either test innovative ways to apply artificial intelligence for behavioral health, or develop innovations in discharge and community integration after inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.
