Over the last decade, perinatal mental health has worsened while rates of perinatal substance use have increased. These conditions are leading contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality and are linked to preterm birth, low birth weight, and cognitive and educational challenges later on in childhood. Yet, organizational resources are often limited, and at the individual level, stigma and guilt, poor symptom recognition, and overwhelming online information discourage help-seeking. As such, many perinatal individuals do not get the information or support they need.
This project aims to address these challenges by developing Pregnancy-2-Postpartum (P2P), a free, anonymous, evidence-informed online program designed to reduce stigma and increase knowledge and help-seeking for perinatal mental health and substance use concerns. P2P will be personalized by perinatal stage, substance use patterns, and anxiety and depression symptoms, and will offer tailored resources and coping skills. P2P is a first-of-its-kind campaign for pregnant/postpartum individuals and their loved ones, designed to be a low-touch but high-reach intervention. The P2P program can be the first step in a “suite” of offerings for perinatal individuals and their loved ones, with opportunities to expand later to provide higher levels of care.
