VA Northwest Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) Advanced Fellowship in Mental Illness Research and Treatment – VA Puget Sound Health Care System

The primary goal of this highly competitive fellowship program is to prepare MDs and Clinical Psychologists for successful careers as research investigators. The mission focus of the Northwest MIRECC is “the invisible wounds of war:” posttraumatic stress disorder and blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury and their complex comorbidities including substance use disorders, chronic pain, and neurodegeneration and dementia. MDs must have completed an ACGME-accredited residency; previous MIRECC MD fellows have come from the following specialties: psychiatry, neurology, neuropathology, internal medicine, and sleep medicine.

Over the course of the two-year program, fellows devote 75 percent of their time to research and educational activities and 25 percent to clinical training. In collaboration with their mentors, fellows will also develop and implement a research project, publish and present findings, participate in grant writing, and utilize the latest technology for educational activities and clinical service delivery.

This highly competitive program recruits two fellows each year: one MD fellow and one Allied Health fellow.

MDs
MD applicants must have completed ACGME-accredited training, be board eligible or board certified, and have an active, unrestricted U.S. license to practice. International medical graduates must also have a current visa and an ECFMG certificate that is valid indefinitely. Applicants on a J-1 visa must also have current ECFMG sponsorship.

Allied Health Professionals
Eligible psychologists and allied health professionals must be U.S. citizens. Psychologists must have graduated from an APA accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology. Completion of an APA accredited internship in clinical or counseling psychology is also required. Allied health professionals must have graduated from an APA accredited doctoral program.
