Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions 4th Annual Meeting

Department News | March 15, 2025

The Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions celebrated five years of improving brain health during its 4th Annual Meeting on March 7, 2025, at UW Medicine South Lake Union. The event featured welcome remarks for UW Medicine Dean Tim Dellit, MD and Garvey Institute Director Jürgen Unützer, MD, MPH, MA followed by a conversation about artificial intelligence and brain health with Tim Althoff, PhD, a vision session with members of the audience, and a look ahead to the institute’s next five years.

The Garvey Institute’s work is made possible by a tremendous gift made by Mike and Lynn Garvey. Their generosity has spurred on tremendous hope in our community. In just five short years, the Garvey Institute has already had an enormous impact at UW and beyond. Nearly 60 Innovation Grants are pioneering dozens of new ways of helping individuals and families living with brain health, mental health, and addiction problems and generating millions of dollars in additional grant and contract funding. The Institute’s outstanding group of senior faculty supported by endowed chairs and professorships have brought tremendous energy and leadership to this work, and new training programs are educating and inspiring the next generation of clinician scientists to explore and pursue careers in brain health. Modern clinical and teaching spaces, built in partnership with UW and the State of Washington, are helping dozens of dedicated clinicians and scientists collaborate on big and small ideas and provide cutting edge treatments to patients and families in need.

The early success of the Garvey Institute and the optimism we feel is in no small part thanks to the rich environment we find ourselves in. UW is one of the most innovative global universities and UW Medicine allows us to offer a unique and robust mix of state-of-the art clinical care, research, and training in an outstanding collaborative environment, and rich partnerships with private and public entities throughout our Pacific Northwest region.

Looking back at the initial five years of the Institute’s work, we are proud of what we have accomplished together and excited about the work ahead. If you’re interested in stories about our people and the innovative work they do, please take some time to read through the Garvey Institute 5-Year Report. Thanks to all who have joined us in our quest to find solutions to the most vexing brain health, mental health, and addiction problems we face in our society today.
