Free training to help WA primary care providers treat mental health

The AIMS Center’s Integrated Care Training Program (ICTP) just selected its third cohort for the Mental Health Learning Series for Primary Care Providers, running January – July 2026. The program is led by Ramanpreet Toor, MD, with a team that includes Anna Ratzliff, MD, PhDPatrick Raue, PhD, and Emily Schutzenhofer, MD and is supported by AIMS Center staff Melissa Farnum, MA.

This six-month, fully remote, cohort-based series equips primary care providers with practical skills to better address mental health needs including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, and ADHD in primary care settings. Since launching in January 2025, 28 people have taken the training, across two sessions.

“Access to care is actually the bigger goal, because access to care, especially in mental health, is so limited,” said Dr. Toor. “I always tell them, the goal is that you can take the first two steps. If patients get better, then they’re good. If they don’t, they can be referred to a psychiatrist.”

The program is free to anyone who practices medicine in Washington and no prior experience treating mental health conditions is required. The training spans six months for one hour per week and is completely online. Participants do some self-guided coursework, like watching recorded videos and slideshows, then gather for a monthly virtual training with Dr. Toor to learn more about different mental health challenges. In each session, Dr. Toor talks about how to assess and evaluate each disorder, how to talk to patients about it and different ways to treat it — from medication to psychosocial interventions.

Please share this opportunity with your primary care colleagues and networks. The AIMS Center will be recruiting in the spring for the August – December cohort.
