Video: Implementing Written Exposure Therapy

Department News | January 30, 2025

Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a new, brief trauma-focused therapy where patients write about their traumatic experience following scripted instruction from a therapist. While retaining the core exposure element of many other trauma-focused psychotherapies, WET has fewer and shorter sessions, does not require homework in-between sessions, and requires considerably less therapist time, training and supervision.

Led by John Fortney, PhD, the Sequenced Treatment of Effectiveness for Posttraumatic Stress (STEPS) trial recently produced this 10-minute video for providers curious about implementing Written Exposure Therapy into their clinics. The video includes Debra Kaysen, PhD describing the therapy itself and CEO of North Central Texas Community Health Center, Ellaheh Ebrahim, MD, describing her experience integrating it into her clinic. For more videos including patient testimonials about their experience receiving Written Exposure Therapy, visit the STEPS YouTube page.
