Our department was incredibly well represented at the Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP) meeting in Milwaukee, WI last month with nearly 20 faculty members and trainees presenting workshops and a number of Huskies winning awards. The AAP Meeting is for psychiatrists who are interested in learning about academic development, teaching psychiatry, and research on psychiatry education. This year’s theme emphasized academic psychiatrists’ role as leaders in finding innovative solutions and novel approaches for challenges such as the introduction of new milestones and entrustable professional activities, an overwhelming (and almost unmanageable) number of applications for our residency programs, an increasing recognition of the magnitude of burnout in ourselves and our trainees, and changes in the delivery of healthcare.
Faculty and trainees presented on everything from Preparing Medical Students and Psychiatric Residents for Practicing with Rural Populations to Teaching with Podcasts in Clinical Settings. Lindsey Lebin, Alissa Petrites and Phaedra Pascoe all won the Resident Psychiatric Educator Award, a two-year award created to honor psychiatry residents who demonstrate particular promise as educators and scholars in academic psychiatry. Suzanne Murray, MD, is now President Elect of AAP and will start her term in 2019.
