Suicide is a growing health problem in our country and the WWAMI region which we serve has particularly high suicide rates. Medical professionals can make an enormous impact on preventing suicides. They play an important role in educating all patients to proactively make homes safer to prevent suicide, accidents, and overdose/addiction. To address suicide as a public health crisis, UW Medicine and Forefront Suicide Prevention in partnership with Seattle Children’s, CoMotion and VA Puget Sound developed All Patients Safe: Suicide Prevention for Medical Professionals.
All Patients Safe is an online training that fulfills the Washington state law requiring health professionals to complete a one-time training in suicide assessment, treatment, and management. Providers have been able to access the training for a little over a year and are overwhelmingly sending in positive feedback. Mean quality scores are 5.19 and 5.29 for the Basic and Advanced Courses, respectively, with the highest possible rating being 6.0. Seventy-five percent of participants said they would recommend the course to others and very much appreciate the videos of real people and role plays that are embedded in the training. Over 2,500 people have registered to take the training and to date, over 900 people have completed both the Basic and the Advanced Course with an additional 345 people completing the Basic course only. We are thrilled that so many people are receiving such a high-quality training on this important subject.
The training is free for medical providers in the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, Children’s University Medical Group (CUMG) practice plan, and members of the Seattle Children’s Care Network (SCCN). It is available for community members for a modest fee.
