The Center for Behavioral Health and Learning (CBHL), Washington State’s newest long-term civil commitment unit, is now a key training site for our residents. Starting this year, R1s and R2s are rotating on the Consultation-Liaison and R2s on the Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatient services at CBHL. Next academic year, a new R2 rotation will offer experience on CBHL’s long-term civil commitment unit. This rotation will include forensic psychiatry training, collaboration with interprofessional teams, and opportunities to follow patients receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) at CBHL’s Garvey Institute Center for Neuromodulation. For R3 and R4 residents, we will offer a one-day per week rotation at CBHL’s long-term civil commitment unit and Center for Neuromodulation, where residents can focus on learning more about the use of treatments like clozapine, long-acting injectables, and ECT/TMS. This will help address significant educational needs in both clinical care and forensic psychiatry.
