New residency pathway focuses on global mental health

Department news | January 31, 2019

Our psychiatry residency program offers a variety of Career Enrichment Pathways to help residents explore different areas of psychiatry and promote their career development. The latest addition is focused on Global Mental Health and Cultural Psychiatry. Pamela Collins, MD, MPH, and Deepa Rao, PhD, serve as faculty coordinators for the new pathway and Manal Khan, MD, and Ritika Batajoo, MD, are resident leaders. Questions about the new pathway should be directed to Tessa Concepcion, MSGH, program coordinator.

Residents in the Global Mental Health/Cultural Psychiatry pathway will learn about health on both a macro (global) level and micro (individual’s culture) level, globalization and its impact on mental health, the use of novel pharmacological and psycho-social interventions to deliver culturally relevant and meaningful care to resource constrained areas, the application/usage of innovative methods for mental health delivery, and the role of US-trained physicians on a global platform and the ethics involved with global health work. Residents who complete the pathway will earn a distinction in Global Mental Health/Cultural Psychiatry.
