Mentorship development program completes pilot run

Department news | April 30, 2017

Jesse Markman, MD, MBA, assisted by Pat Areán, PhD, and Heidi Combs, MD, has developed a new Mentorship Development Program (MDP) for faculty in our department. This exciting six-month, one morning per month, small-group and interactive program aims to help faculty members be as confident and effective as possible as mentors. The first (pilot) run of this program just concluded. Participants included members of our Faculty Development Committee and Chiefs of Service. Over the six months, topics included Mentoring 101, Mentoring Diversity, Coaching, Negotiation and Feedback, Mentoring through Difficult Situations, and sessions about helping mentees with finding a focus, networking, working in teams, writing grants and papers, the IRB process, achieving regional and national recognition, and navigating the promotions process. We will be using feedback from this pilot series, as well as the results of our recent survey of junior faculty regarding their mentorship experiences, to further refine the Mentorship Development Program. Stay tuned!
