Department News | December 30, 2025

Mandy Owens, PhD, an assistant professor with PBSCI, has been selected to join the inaugural Research Impact Advocates cohort organized by the UW Office of Research. Dr. Owens specializes in the treatment of substance use disorders and supports family members of individuals with substance use concerns using a Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) approach.

The program runs from December 2025 through October 2026 and is designed to help faculty build skills and connections to engage public audiences about research evidence and its impact. Participants will take part in training sessions on op-ed writing, science communication, and media engagement, as well as mentorship opportunities with experienced colleagues. Each advocate will also complete at least two public engagement activities during the year.
