In the 2019 WA State legislative session, then-Speaker of the House Frank Chopp (D) sponsored legislation to work with the University of Washington and UW Medicine to transform the state’s behavioral health system. A tremendous advocate for mental health, Chopp helped to secure resources for a new Center for Behavioral Health and Learning at UW Medical Center Northwest, for expanding our residency training program in psychiatry, and for establishing a 24/7 psychiatric consultation program serving every county in the state.
Unfortunately, Rep. Chopp passed away unexpectedly earlier this year shortly after his retirement from public service. In recognition of his many contributions, we are looking to establish the Chopp Scholars Program in Behavioral Health. This program will seek to support trainees and early career professionals who have an interest in mental health policy. Individuals selected to serve as Chopp Scholars will have contact with local, state, or federal legislators interested in mental health policy and receive mentorship from expert teachers at UW and beyond.
We plan to raise funds for this program and we hope to create a network of Chopp Scholars across the state who will work together to improve access to effective behavioral health care in every Washington community. If you are interested in supporting this initiative, please consider donating to the Frank Chopp Fund in Behavioral Health.
