Expansion of residency leadership

Department news | December 30, 2019

Our residency program is growing and we are making substantial investments to strengthen its administrative and faculty support. We are reviewing our curriculum and evaluation processes and anticipate significant modernization to meet the challenge of training psychiatrists for the future of psychiatry. We are also adding a new structure and additional support for our residency program leadership. With this new structure, the Program Director will work closely with a leadership team with additional staff administrative capacity. These changes are designed to support the anticipated growth of our residency and represent a significant departmental commitment to the core educational mission. Summary of key changes:

  • We have created two new core Associate Program Director (APD) Positions. These positions will be supported through a combination of UW and VA resources.
    • The Evaluation APD will have the responsibility of the implementation of milestones and evaluations, leadership for Clinical Competency Committee and support all accreditation processes.
    • The Curriculum APD will have the responsibility for didactics, clinical rotations, scheduling and the supervision program.
  • We will continue to have five site-based Associate Program Director roles. The primary focus of these roles will be to continue to support local educational excellence. Site based APDs include VA, UWMC Inpatient/CL, UWMC Outpatient, HMC Inpatient /CL and HMC Outpatient/PES.
  • We will expand the amount of administrative support available to this leadership team including part-time instructional design capacity.

These changes come in the context of several changes to our residency program:

  • There will be an expansion of four new residency positions over each of the next four years which will increase our total complement of residents in the Seattle track by 16.
  • This year we have added a Montana track which will have a total complement of 12 residents by July 2023. Residents in this track spend the first two years in Seattle and then complete their training in Billings, MT.
  • The Idaho track is anticipated to become an independent program starting in July 2021.
  • The sum of these changes will result in a resident complement of 85 total residents by July 2024. We will have an active recruitment process for the new Associate Program Director positions. We are looking for individuals to bring their creative and innovative energy to these important new roles.

Please see our announcement for details including the recruitment process for the two new leadership positions.
