Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship leadership change

Department news | May 31, 2019

This summer, Andy Saxon, MD, will be stepping down as Addiction Psychiatry fellowship director after almost 25 years in this role. Dr. Saxon is a nationally-recognized addiction psychiatry researcher, teacher, clinician, and role model, and has done a superb job leading this fellowship. He has trained and inspired a generation of addiction psychiatrists.

We are delighted to announce that Jonathan Buchholz, MD, will become our new Addiction Psychiatry fellowship director as of July 1, 2019. Dr. Buchholz completed his psychiatry residency, chief resident year, and addiction psychiatry fellowship in our department. He is an outstanding clinician and teacher and has won our department’s Outstanding Junior Clinician Teacher Faculty Award, two outstanding teaching awards from our psychiatry residents, and a WWAMI Pro Recognition Award for outstanding professionalism from UW medical students. He has served on the national American Psychiatric Association Workgroup on Substance Use Curriculum. He has also already been centrally involved in the Addiction Psychiatry fellowship, chairing its Clinical Competency Committee.

We want to thank Dr. Saxon for his years of outstanding service leading the fellowship, and to welcome Dr. Buchholz! Fortunately, Dr. Saxon will be continuing to work at our Seattle VA and in our department and will be working with Dr. Buchholz to ensure a smooth transition for the fellowship.
