Understanding the Brain
Our neuroscientists use cutting-edge techniques to advance the understanding and treatment of behavioral health problems, from traumatic brain injury to Alzheimer’s Disease, substance use disorders and depression. We strive to understand psychiatric disturbances and behaviors at a fundamental biological level along with the mechanisms of action. Our basic and clinical neuroscientists partner with expert clinicians to make sure our findings in the lab lead to effective treatments and ultimately, better health services and policy.

Our neuroscientists benefit from:
– Extensive and collaborative basic and clinical neurosciences laboratory space

– Facilities for a wide range of molecular, cellular, and behavioral investigation at each of our research sites (University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle Children’s Research Institute)

– Psychophysiology laboratories performing studies in such areas as evoked potentials and other quantitative EEG methods, eye tracking movements; a modern sleep research laboratory; and neuropsychology laboratories for psychometric assessment of behavior

– Collaborations with UW scientists in Genome Sciences, Pharmacology, Psychology, Physiology, and Radiology
