Thomas Walton, PhD, MSW

Dr. Walton’s research examines alcohol use, mental health, and HIV risk among U.S. military service members, with a particular focus on sexual minority men in active-duty service. He is working to build the evidence base for prevention approaches to heavy drinking and HIV-risk behavior in this population. Dr. Walton’s other work has focused on motivational interviewing and on engaging service members with untreated substance use and PTSD. He has also studied suicide prevention, text-based peer support, and app-based interventions. He holds an MSW and a PhD in Social Welfare from UW and completed postdoctoral training in alcohol research.
