Matt Becker, MD, PhD
I am an Acting Instructor in the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Affiliate Faculty at the Allen Institute for Neural Dynamics. My research program unites two disparate fields, motor systems neuroscience and psychiatry, to discover how internal brain dynamics are translated into the moment-to-moment expression of behavior. Psychomotor signs are prevalent and critical for psychiatric diagnosis, but remain unlinked to the brain mechanisms that shape them. I measure psychomotor behavior at the resolution of motor systems neuroscience and relate it to simultaneously recorded neuromodulator signals, asking how dopamine and norepinephrine influence the speed of decisions and movements.
My doctoral work identified cerebellar deceleration control as a mechanistic account of dysmetria, the hallmark sign of cerebellar dysfunction. I now apply that approach to psychiatric illness, with the long-term goal of converting psychomotor signs into quantitative measures of neuromodulator circuit state.
