Montana State researchers help advance sleep-aid device as part of $4.3 million project

Soon, someone feeling the need for some extra Z’s may benefit from a wearable device that aids the brain in the biochemical cleansing that leaves a person feeling refreshed after a full night of sleep. The project comes in the wake of recent discoveries about the importance of the glymphatic system as explained in a popular TED Talk by project co-leader Jeffrey Iliff, PhD.




Enhancing rural primary care access to mental health and opioid management consultations in Washington via telehealth

Richard Veith, MD and colleagues in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with support from faculty in Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine and in UW Medicine are conducting a four-year telehealth project funded by the HRSA Office for Advancing Telehealth to address critical shortages in mental health care and pain management in rural, underserved sites in Washington State. The lack of mental health services leads to under-treatment, higher rates of suicide, increased use of emergency services, and hospitalizations. Compounding the problems related to inadequate access to mental health care, primary care providers (PCPs) in rural areas report having inadequate skills to manage mental health problems, especially serious psychiatric disorders and conditions aggravated by cooccurring substance abuse.





DOD funds $4.3M human trial on device to enhance sleep

Jeffrey Iliff, PhD, is co-PI of the first human trial of a device to speed up and enhance glymphatic function (brain cleansing) that occurs when we sleep. The trial is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and based on research funded by the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions.
