Behaviors and Executive Skills in T21 (BEST21)

We are conducting a study to understand the role of problem-solving in challenging behaviors for children with Down syndrome so that we can better understand the development of and treat these behaviors. If you agree to participate, this study will involve questionnaires, some of which may be completed at home. You would also attend an in-person visit that involves measuring your child’s naturally-occurring brain activity with EEG as well as cognitive assessments. We would schedule your visit around your schedule to the best of our ability and we can schedule this visit in a location that is convenient for you (UW, home visits, etc.). Participants will receive an $80 gift card to thank them for their time.

Deciphering Mechanisms of ECT Outcomes and Adverse Effects (DECODE)

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective antidepressant non-invasive brain stimulation therapies for adults with major depression. However, a number of patients fail to respond despite adequate trials, and while clinically beneficial, ECT can produce adverse cognitive effects including amnesia, executive dysfunction, and verbal dysfluency.

In this prospective study, we propose the first investigation integrating multiple units of analysis including clinical and cognitive phenotyping, whole-brain neuroimaging, EEG, and E-field modeling to establish the mechanisms underlying ECT-induced antidepressant response (response biomarkers) and cognitive adverse effects (safety biomarkers), as well as to find the “sweet spot” of ECT dosing for optimal antidepressant benefit and cognitive safety. This proposal will result in a paradigm shift from “trial and error” approaches of ECT parameter selection to individualized, precision dosing to improve patient outcomes.

Systematic redesign of an autism community implementation toolkit for schools

The aims of the current project are to: 1) Engage stakeholders to identify targets for ACT SMART redesign to optimize its fit for middle and high school providers who serve autistic adolescents; 2) Conduct prototyping and usability field testing of the redesigned ACT SMART and iteratively refine to ensure usability, feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness for use in schools.

Trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) for ADHD

TNS uses a device to send currents into the brain and stimulate the trigeminal nerve. This method has proven effective to treat depression and other psychiatric disorders. The research team is working to understand if this approach could help improve executive function and reduce symptoms of ADHD.

Previous studies have shown that this is effective for about half of people with ADHD. Our research team is working to better understand for whom this therapy might be most effective and if this could be a viable new treatment for ADHD.

Developing a cannabis intervention for young adults with psychosis

Up to one-third of young people experiencing early psychosis use cannabis, and one in four meet criteria for a cannabis use disorder. Cannabis use is associated with multiple negative outcomes, including relapse, rehospitalization, increased psychotic symptoms and reduced treatment engagement and medication adherence. Psychosis relapse is a particularly devastating and costly outcome, leading to greater disability and accounting for $37 billion in healthcare costs per year. Cannabis is considered the most preventable cause of psychosis relapse. Despite this, no effective cannabis-reduction intervention has been developed for this population.

This study will address the urgent need for an effective cannabis-reduction intervention for this high-risk population by adapting a gold-standard treatment, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), for youth and young adults living with psychosis. A tailored cannabis intervention and provider manual will be developed and evaluated for feasibility and acceptability. This novel intervention has the potential to mitigate the costly impact of psychosis on public health systems and ultimately improve psychosis outcomes among young people living in Washington State. 

WITH (Whole person Integrated Texting for Health)

Text messaging holds promise as a strategy for engaging older adults in depression treatment. The purpose of this project will be to develop and pilot test a text messaging intervention delivered in primary care settings practicing integrated care. Recent data shows that the vast majority of older adults have a cell phone and that about half have sent an email or text within the past month. Among that latter group, about one third reported they did so “most days.” There is research showing that text messaging with older adults is feasible that is focused on mental health was well received and effective. None of the prior studies looked at text messaging as an adjunct to mental health treatment delivered in primary care. This project will address that gap.

Collaborative care for perinatal mental health – the LAMMHA project

Los Angeles Maternal Mental Health Access (LAMMHA) is a five year program (2022 – 2027) funded by The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) to support health centers in Los Angeles to identify and treat common perinatal mental disorders (CPMD) and reduce the risk of suicide. The LAMMHA initiative is a collaboration between Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County (CCALAC)Elevation Health Partners (EHP)Maternal Mental Health Now (MMHN)Concert Health and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. Co-created with Los Angeles community stakeholders, the LAMMHA program currently offers Los Angeles County providers and community clinics two different levels of support to improve perinatal mental health care.

Care Partners: bridging families, clinics, and communities to advance late-life depression care

Through Archstone Foundation’s Depression in Late-Life Initiative, the Care Partners project seeks to improve depression care for older adults by building innovative and effective community partnerships. Specifically, the Care Partners project has the following goals: 1) develop late-life depression innovations among primary care, community-based organizations (CBOs) and family, 2) build a learning community of clinics, CBOs, and researchers in California who will work together on the Care Partners Late-Life Depression Initiative to improve care for depressed older adults, 3) conduct an evaluation of the developing models, and 4) develop and conduct a Learning Collaborative in Year 5 for California clinics and CBOs interested in improving depression care for older adults. Throughout the project, project teams at the University of Washington (UW) and UC Davis (UCD) provide technical assistance and evaluation to support site development and sustainment. Together, the community-engaged partnerships have tremendous potential to improve access to care, patient engagement, patient care experience and quality of care. In addition, CBO and clinic partners are well primed to improve care through addressing the social determinants of health.
