Innovations in Addressing Substance Use and Addiction

Hosted by the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, this one-day event will showcase the department’s efforts to tackle our region’s challenges with addiction and substance use disorders. Attendees will interact with addiction researchers, educators and clinicians during a full day of events including featured speakers, interactive booths and an afternoon of roundtable workshops.

Panelists will share their priorities for future addictions clinical care, research, and/or education. The panel will discuss their thoughts on how the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences could help address these priority areas. Panelists include:

  • Lauren Davis – Representative | 32nd Legislative District
  • Reagan Dunn – Councilmember | King County District 9
  • Brad Finegood – Strategic Advisor at Public Health
  • Charissa Fotinos – Medicaid and Behavioral Health Medical Director | WA State Health Care Authority
  • Nicole Macri – Representative | 43rd Legislative District
  • Jim Vollendroff – Liquor and Cannabis Board Member

Attendees will interact with clinicians, researchers, and educators from across the translational spectrum.

Questions will be collected throughout the event and answered live onstage by UW faculty.

Group discussion to join an opportunity to improve our communities. All topics are presented at each session. Topics will include:

  • Moving basic science discovery into the clinic
  • Community and state partnerships to support substance use prevention and treatment
  • Addiction treatment beyond the clinic
  • Expanding and improving access to substance use disorder care at UW Medicine
  • Commercializing findings in the research lab
  • Applying research in policy development
  • Preparing the next generation of addiction providers, and addressing addiction in youth and young adults
