For the past twelve years, Mark Snowden, MD, MPH, has been a driving force behind mental health services at Harborview Medical Center in his role as Chief of Psychiatry at HMC. After much thought, he has decided to move out of that role beginning July 2024.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve as Chief of Psychiatry,” said Dr. Snowden. “The greatest insight I’ve come to over the years was evident very early in the job, namely, that the work we do daily on the front lines of patient care, teaching, and research is the engine that makes this service run.”

Dr. Snowden has been extremely influential in developing and mentoring the next generation of faculty members and has helped a generation of faculty become expert clinicians, teachers and leaders. Because of this, the behavioral health services at Harborview are in very good hands. We will work with Rick Goss, Medical Director at HMC, to select an interim service chief over the next few weeks and HMC will launch a national search for a new Chief of Psychiatry in the coming months.

Lucky for us, Dr. Snowden is not retiring! He will continue in his role as Vice Chair for Clinical Services in the department, will continue to serve on the Harborview and Department EDI Councils, and will continue his research and work with the PEARLS program. We plan to celebrate and thank him for his leadership sometime this summer and will provide details closer to that event.
