A team consisting of Jennifer Piel, MD, JDSarah Kopelovich, PhDKate Michaelsen, MDDeborah Cowley, MD, and project manager Susan Reynolds completed and submitted to the Washington State legislature a superb analysis and proposal for high-quality forensic teaching services. In collaboration with Western State Hospital (WSH), Department of Social and Health Services, and the Office of Forensic Mental Health Services, the proposal focuses on development of teaching programs for general psychiatry residents, forensic psychiatry fellows and forensic psychology fellows. Among other things, the UW team conducted a systemic review of the literature, consulted with national experts, and arranged site visits of model programs. The proposal details a step-wise implementation plan, first focusing on the environment of care and educational infrastructure at WSH, then strengthening the existing forensic psychology postdoctoral fellowship and introducing elective rotations for psychiatry residents, followed by development of a forensic psychiatry fellowship. The report details the risk, benefits, and barriers associated with plan development. Efforts to secure state funding for the plan are currently underway.
