Michael V Vitiello, PhD, and his fellow multiple PIs; Susan McCurry, PhD, Research Professor of Psychosocial and Community Health Nursing, and Michael Von Korff, ScD, Senior Investigator, Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI), have received a two-year, $372,000 Diversity Supplement to their National Institute on Aging-funded five-year randomized controlled trial, Efficacy of Scalable CBT-I for Insomnia in Older Adults with Osteoarthritis Pain (R01 AG053221).
The goal of the parent trial, known as the OATS (OsteoArthritis and Therapy for Sleep) study, is to evaluate the efficacy of telephone-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia versus an education-based attention control to improve sleep in a state-wide sample of older adults with severe, chronic osteoarthritis-related pain and insomnia at post-treatment and twelve-month follow-up assessments. It will also examine the effects of treatment efficacy for sleep on the osteoarthritis-related symptoms of pain, depression, and fatigue, as well as treatment-related changes in healthcare utilization and the cost effectiveness of the treatment. The two-year diversity supplement will support Manu Thakral, MSN, NP, PhD, Research Associate, KPWHRI, in addressing her additional research question, utilizing electronic pharmacy data to determine whether baseline sedative and opioid use predicts differences in insomnia severity scores and in perceived treatment effectiveness of treatment at post-treatment.
