Department News | February 25, 2026

We are excited to announce that Mark Duncan, MD will lead the department’s Division of Addiction Psychiatry as the inaugural holder of the Nicole K. Engel Endowed Professorship for Addiction Psychiatry. Supported by the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions, Dr. Duncan will provide leadership for our clinical, educational, and translational research programs focused on improving the lives of individuals and families affected by substance use disorders. He will support our faculty and staff who are working on therapeutic approaches and solutions for people struggling with addiction and facilitate collaborations among researchers, clinicians, educators, policy makers and advocates who collectively make up the department’s Division of Addiction Psychiatry.

Dr. Duncan attended medical school at Rush University where he developed an interest in co-occuring disorders. He completed two separate residencies: one in family medicine at West Suburban Medical Center in Chicago, and one in psychiatry here at UW, where he was also a fellow in the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

As a PBSCI faculty member since 2013, Dr. Duncan has been seeing patients in the outpatient psychiatry clinic, and served  as a consultant for both the Behavioral Health Integration Program (BHIP) where he provides training for residents in psychiatry and family medicine and the Mental Health Integration Program (MHIP). He also leads the department’s PACC ECHO program and contributes to research studies such as the Harm Reduction with Pharmacotherapy (HARP) study in alcohol abuse and homelessness and the Collaborating to Heal Addiction and Mental Health in Primary Care (CHAMP) study.
