Therese Grant, PhD
Personal Statement
I am an epidemiologist who has worked in substance abuse research and intervention at the University of Washington School of Medicine for over 25 years. I hold the Ann Streissguth Endowed Professor in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Director of the Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit, and Associate Director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute.
Since its inception in 1991, I have directed the Washington State Parent-Child Assistance Program (PCAP), an award-winning intervention model working with mothers who abuse alcohol and drugs during pregnancy. I have published and spoken widely on intervention with high-risk mothers and their children, effects of prenatal alcohol and drug exposure, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
Education
PhD, Epidemiology , University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, 1995-1999
MA, Education, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, 1980-1982
BA, General Science, Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington, 1977-1979
Teaching Philosophy
My goals in teaching/training are not only to convey information and demonstrate concepts in a clear and compelling manner, but also to elicit genuine interest and inspire action. I have supervised or mentored over forty graduate and undergraduate students and find this to be one of the most rewarding aspects of my work, particularly when we develop longstanding productive relationships. |
